Oil Pulling - How & Why You Should Be Doing It

What Is Oil Pulling?

Oil pulling - originally called "kavala" or gundusha" - is an ancient Ayurvedic practice in which coconut oil is swished within the mouth in order to cleanse the gums, whiten the teeth, and to draw toxins out of the body.
Our mouths harvest billions of bacteria, fungi, parasites, viruses, and toxins. If you've ever had strep throat, you've experienced just one of the problems these harmful germs can cause when they decide to make a home within our bodies. This is why it's important to routinely cleanse our mouths of these nasty, dangerous microorganisms through practices like oil pulling!

What is The Proper Way To Do An Oil Pull?

When doing an oil pull, it is important to do so first thing in the morning, on an empty stomach. Place a tablespoon of coconut oil into your mouth, and vigorously swish it around, pulling it back and forth between all of your teeth.

Do this for at least 20 minutes, and be careful not to accidentally swallow any of the oil - this will only put the bacteria and toxins the oil has pulled out, back into your body!

Once 20 minutes has passed, it is important that you spit the oil out into the trash and not into the sink or toilet, as the oil may solidify in your drain or pipes. Wash your mouth with warm salt water immediately after spitting the oil out.

Why Coconut Oil?

While other oils like sesame or olive may be used for an oil pull, coconut oil is one of the best. This is because coconut oil contains capric, caprylic, and lauric acids. These acids give it strong anti-microbial properties that fight harmful microorganisms which may be living within the body. Coconut oil also exhibits antibacterial and anti-fungal properties which prevent bacterial and fungal infections from arising. Additionally, is has strong anti-inflammatory properties that can soothe the gums.
